Golden Retriever in 19th Century dress. The Golden Retriever is a relatively modern and very popular breed of dog. It was developed in Scotland between 1864 and 1889 as a retrieving dog to use while hunting wild fowl. Today, it is one of the most popular family pets. Bred as a sporting dog, in accordance with the goals of the first breed developer, Sir Dudley Majoribanks, later Lord Tweedmouth, the breed was first accepted for registration by the  Kennel Club of England in 1903.
